Feigning Interest

Last Saturday night, I spent the majority of my evening engaged in interesting conversation with a gentleman I met at my favorite local bar. We got the initial pleasantries out of the way; what do you do, where are you from, etc. and then our conversation turned to the perennially loaded question…what do you do for fun?

As I started in on my interests, I mentioned that I like football. Mr. Interesting quickly turned to Mr. Dubious. Suddenly I was peppered with questions like: How many games are in the regular season? Who is the Giants coach? Which player has the most rushing yards in the NFL this year? He asked these as he sat back, crossed his arms and looked at me with a self satisfied grin on his face as if he had just caught me in a lie. And I found myself getting pissed.

What is with the pop quiz?

This isn’t the first time I have come across this situation. Because I am not the textbook definition of “girly”, I am often accused of being interested in things solely because it is something men would find attractive. I find myself quizzed often.

If you say you like to cook, I don’t ask you to rattle of the ingredients for crème brule. If someone tells me they like movies, I don’t challenge with “Really? Well who won the Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1972?” (For the record: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid)

Maybe there are girls out there who take a page from the Cosmo playbook and pretend to be interested in something because it seems more attractive? If the only way to get a man’s attention is to pretend to like the same things that he does, there is a serious problem.

Interests are just those…interests. You shouldn’t have to qualify them with anything. It is what makes people different. If we all liked the same things, life would be pretty boring. In any case, I find the quizzing to be juvenile. You should at least give the person the benefit of the doubt.

At any rate, he didn’t get my number.

I am very proud of you for that! By the way...did you answer any of the questions and did you call him out on asking them??? How did it all end???

Because TLIV ALWAYS has the NFL Sunday ticket or NFL channels on I could answer ALL of those questions. He would be so proud of me!!!

Most guys (well, that may be using a braod brush to say 'most'...haha, but) would just appreciate the fact that you are interested in it enough that you don't mind if they religiously watch it every sunday, or are passionately scavenging the free agent list to pick up players for their fantasy football team.

Although, those were very basic questions, I wouldn't relate it to some obscure recipe... (although creme brule may not be that obscure it's just that I both cook and watch football and can answer the football questions and not the creme brule recipe...haha...)

Anyway, off topic... regardless, his grilling seems unnecessary and I site my paragraph 1.

Okay...I wouldn't mind it if football was on only on Sunday. However, if you are a true fan (as TLIV is) you will know that football is no longer JUST on Sundays. I actually really like watching it on Sundays. It is the Saturdays, Fridays, Mondays, and all of the weekly analyzing that kill me.

***side note...TLIV is truly in a pickle right now. He HATES Dallas but has to cheer for them tonight b/c it is better for the Eagles if they win. It is truly hysterical watching this conflict of intrest!!!!!

You forgot Thursdays too! haha...

It's great... I mean, baseball is on essentially everyday.. so why not have football on 4 days?

Little trivia for ya - the only days of the year there aren't sports on from the big 4 (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) is the day before and after the MLB all star break...

Anyway...

McD... You may win an argument with me from a while ago...

I have heard the new Rocky movie is good! Once I see it I may have to give you your props... although I will wait until I see it to actually give you those props...haha...

But I mean, c'mon... V was sooo completely bad it was tough to have any faith...

Kinda like if they made a Godfather 4... after 3, would you really have hope?

p.s. VIck is my fantasy QB this week and Dallas is my D... this game is going absolutely PERFECT for me...

So in a strange twist of fate, I ran into this gentleman again on Friday night and we fought again (Pooh...he is an Eagles fan!) So three of us girls met him and some of his friends at the bar on Sunday to watch the game together and have a tauntfest. It was good times until the Giants lost in typical Giants fashion. But I did get to break out the sprinkler as my touchdown dance.

My friends and I are all planning a group outing to see Rocky on Wednesday (opening night) and I cannot wait. In fact, one of my friends sends me a daily countdown. Those are true fans.

You'd like my friend Mike, he likes to bring out all those old school dances...
"Churn the butter"... "
Start the Chainsaw"... etc...

Let's not forget his patented "Shoulder Shimmy"...

haha.. cracks me up... goofy white guy... but I must say he does have rhythm.

I have yet to ever request a blog topic, however, this time I will. You probably intended on doing this anyway... but...

You have to write a Rocky Balboa movie review for one of your next blogs!

I'm all for the Rocky review as the next blog topic.

It is a definite possibility. I can't even begin to explain how exccited I am. Or how sad I will be if it sucks.

I am up to 23 cards I think. My favorite was from Ma & Pa B. He told me he was still on the lookout for a millionaire in his late twenties for me. Now that is a grandfather!

Totals ladies??

Twenty-one. I guess we are in last. :(

Before Moose came along, Pa had strongly suggested that I go on a singles cruise!

McD and I both have 23. It is nice to have company in the basement again. Welcome back McD!

No kidding. I got no love yesterday. This is embarrassing. I think I had like 40 last year. My current ROI is only 41%!

I'm up to 25 now. Got 2 yesterday.

we got three today...twenty-six!

ahem... cards smards...

HOW WAS ROCKY!?!?!??!?!?!!?

Anonymous said...

OK..I'm officially ready to throw my hat in the ring....I've got 30 as of yesterday.

I think there should be a new category... the real winner being determined by plus minus ratio...

I got 4... I sent out 0. (4 more than I anticipated...) So, I am plus 4.

p.s. I think McD's underdog mentality in this card competition is going to be highly inspired by the new Rocky movie... just a hunch...

It doesn't matter. Queen B and T Bone basically have Christmas card wallpaper. They have about 45! We have 35.
