Ray Liotta is out in full force. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the reference, that is my Christmas nickname. It was derived in homage to an episode of the now defunct TV show “Just Shoot Me” where Ray Liotta, playing himself, is totally obsessed with Christmas. So much so that he decorated his whole house like Santa’s workshop and even goes so far as hiring midgets to wrap presents for him…his very own elves.
I love Christmas. I love the decorations, the constant family gatherings, the food, the gift giving, the carols and just the general warm and fuzzy feelings it evokes.
My Christmas season kicked off on Sunday morning when I decided it was time to put up my tree. So I trudged down to the basement to pull my fake, perfectly pre-lit tree out of storage. I acquired this tree last year on Black Friday…or as I like to affectionately call it, The Most Stressful Day of My Life. Never again.
Anyway, much to Gail B’s astonishment, I put my huge muscles to work in getting that sucker upstairs by myself. It took me the better part of an hour to get the tree up and to separate all of the branches that had gotten flattened over the year it had spent in the box. Then I took a deep breath of relief…only to inhale that most festive of tree smells…basement. Enter a healthy dose of Fabreeze.
Once the tree was standing and electrified, I started on the decorating. I pulled out my roll of ribbon and started winding it around the tree. My compulsion to have things balanced and even made this a daunting task. I put the ribbon on the tree and stepped back to observe my work. It wasn’t even. I tried again. Same result. I got it right by about the 5th time but when I looked at it from a different angle, it was still not right. I started again from scratch. This went on for about 20 minutes before I finally let it go. But from now until Christmas, I will be making minor ribbon adjustments daily.
Then I moved on to the ornaments. I had forgotten what I had bought in previous years so unwrapping the tissue paper surrounding each one was like my first taste of Christmas morning. When I set them all out on the table, I realized just how girly my tree was about to become. I am thinking that one day I will hear my own version of the “Christmas Tree, Unfair to Zach” song being sung around my house.

Now that the tree was up, I needed to get some presents under it. There is nothing sadder then a lonely Christmas tree. So last night, in the company of the Midge (my own elf!) I wrapped the four presents I have bought so far.
So now that the tree was done and presents were being compiled and wrapped, it was time to get down to the real business of the holiday season. Those damn Christmas cards. Last night, I defeated the beast…I finished writing and stamping all 56. I had to up the ante this year if I have a shot at winning the Christmas Card Competition as described in last year’s blog.
To date I have received 5. I think this is a good start given the fact that it is December 6th and I haven’t even sent mine out yet. The taunting and the phone calls relaying the daily totals have not started, much to my dismay. Does this mean we are growing as people? God, I hope not.
So here is to a great holiday season filled with joy, the spirit of giving and some serious ass kicking. Bring it on!

I saw the tree in person on Sunday night...very pretty.
FYI...I only have 4 cards. I'm already in last place and don't have much hope of climbing out of the basement. Moose has way too many single guy friends!
well, unfortunately guys I can't really help you out in the card department. Since I will be sending cards to eboogie, mcdougal and queen b it seems that ny contribution will net out amoung the 3 of you.
Sorry....
Being the gambler that I am, I thought I would post some odds for the Christmas card competition.
Although, I don't remember who won last year, it was probably not revealed on the blog and was more of an in person event... then again, if McD won she probably would have had a whole blog bragging about it... hmmm, either way, her strong desire and dedication to winning has put her as the favorite at this point...
But, as everyone who bets on dogs and horses knows (and I know the McD posse is familiar with that - the odds can always change)...
ODDS:
eboogie: 25-1
mato: 20-1
ma b: 15-1
pooh: 7-1
queen B / T-Bone: 3-1
McDougall: 2-1
Did I miss anyone?
Well Ma B And Mato don't usually play but I am sure they would be happy that you included them.
I think the odds are a little off though. T and Gail B are by far the favorite. I would have to say that us three girls will be pretty close in odds because what they have in in-laws, I make up for with friends!
But gettng a new job this year may have either really hurt me or really helped me. Only time will tell...
I didn't get any cards yesterday :(
I would be upset with mato for sending cards to the whole family. However, I get a card from midge (McD's friend) every year, so alls fair in reaching out to your siblings' friends for the sake of competition. Some times defense is the best offense!
Yesterday, I went to the mailbox and was so exicted because I had a pretty gold envelope waiting inside. I was bummed it was only one card, but one is better than none. Well, imagine my surprise when I opened it and inside was a miniturized catalog from Lux, Bond and Green. Now, it is bad enough that they fooled me into thinking I was one card closer to being crowned champ of the ccc, but they also flaunted in my face that I will never get a $20,000 diamond bracelet. That is just mean.
I sent mine out today so hopefully I get a windfall next week!
Oh and I forgot to mention in the blog that Eboogie broke one of my ornaments!! Boo...
Do you know that I had debated, and erased, and re-typed, and erased, and re-typed... Gail B, or queen B...
I came to the conclusion that they were one in the same... is that right?
Odds are a living thing... here is the latest update based on updated information...
ODDS:
mato: 25-1
ma b: 20-1
eboogie: 10-1
pooh: 6-1
McDougall: 6-1
queen B / T-Bone: 2-1
Ouch...I am in a drought. None for the last two days. Still at 5.
FYI - I have 0.
haha.
Four...I have been stuck in last place with four fricken cards for two days!
McD...I hope I get yours today. I can't handle another day of no cards.
Well if not today, you know you will get it tomorrow. I technically have 6 up but since two came for the Midge (she had two different versions and sent me both) I can only count that once.
You have to have some type of integrity in this competition.
Yeah, you might want to explain the integrity thing to your father. 14 bills from Sprint that say happy holidays don't count a christmas cards!
I have received confirmation that my cards have arrived...so Eboogie, you should definitely have at least one today.
I was just on the phone with T-Bone and he had a few comments of his own...
1. They are definitely in 1st place. I think they got 5 cards today alone.
2. Based on the current odds, he plans to bet on Mato and then throw the competition in order to collect. There is that integrity for you.
3. Because of his close, personal relationship with Sprint Customer Service as a result of their daily phone calls, he does believe that counting all 14 cards is perfectly acceptable.
Yeah, I'm in last. I only have six!
Tied...I also only have 6 :(
Not that I am competing, but I am still at 0... holding strong... But I fear I may be receiving one soon...
Updated Odds:
mato: 25-1
ma b: 20-1
eboogie: 10-1
McDougall: 10-1
pooh: 4-1
queen B / T-Bone: 2-1
just got the mail...we have 10 total.
mato-queen b and t bone have gotten your card. mcd and i have not. what is going on?
I got 3 yesterday...but still only have a pitiful 9. I am firmly in last place...and I don't like it!
Yeah Mato, are you trying to sabotage us??
Well, I had to send Queen B and T-Bone a card early because it had what I owed to them from the trip.
I just sent my cards out the beginning of the week, so McD you should be getting yours very soon.
Eboogie...unfortunately your's has not gone out yet because I was sending it with your present. It will go in the mail tonight.
On a different note, I've sent the family a present to add to their dvd collection. It's sent to Eboogie, but it's for all of you.
I am used to that! When I lived with Eboogie, people would give us "couples gifts." She got custody of everything in the divorce.
YOU WALKED OUT ON ME! Consequently, I should get to keep everything!
By the way, I got three today. My mother-in-law is aware of the competition, so she was very nice and sent an extra one from their cats. Three today...brings the total to 13.
sssssssssssssSSSSSSSS!
(Loud whistle blow...)
Flag on the play...
Personal foul, eboogie, unnecessary groveling of in-laws for extra cards...
5 card penalty, replay the down.
I think it was intentional...make it 10.
I also got 3 yesterday, which still leaves me in last with 12.
I would never walk out on you! I just figured it was time to give up the Three's Company lifesyle. Much as I enjoy Moose's cooking.
Well, I've been unofficially tracking how I'd be doing if I were to throw my hat in the ring...and don't worry McD, I only have 10 cards to date.
But, I was thinking about it and I really believe that single people should get some kind of 'handicap' since they don't have the in-law factor on their side.....
Single = Handicap?
I will not back this idea...
No - I meant it as the "golf" term; and that strokes (or cards) should be added to your tally. You have to admit that a single person is at a disadvantage in this competition since they don't have the in-law and spouses friends to rely on.
It has nothing to do with disparaging the single lifestyle.
I promise that I didn't grovel to the in-laws, but if the committee decides not to count the card from Mousie and Sweet Pea, I won't count it. However, T Bone is not allowed to be on the committee since last night he was counting a card they got returned to them b/c someone moved, and he counted that as a card he received! It doesn't matter, T Bone and Queen B must have about 30 cards already. We are all just fighting not to come in last.
I do not think I could ever enter a competition where I require a handicap. That is just an excuse in case you perform poorly. No deal.
If I lose, I'll just expend more effort next year. And I will not concede. I've got faith in my peeps.
McD is right, as far as the handicap goes...
The only time a handicap is used in golf is in amateur tournaments (charity events) or in gambling between buddies...
In professional golf, there is no handicap...
And, I CERTAINLY would not be giving vegas quality odds on an unprofessional event...
Therefor, the ruling stands:
NO HANDICAPPING.
Also, I am still at 0. But I fear that I am destined to receive 2 this week... Which I guess is good considering it is 2 more than I sent out...
I think the Card Receiving Counting Event is definitely a chick event, like the balance beam, basically it's not even fair for guys.... much like this card event... I think T-Bone may be the only hetero male to be competing in such an event in the entire world... and really, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt given that he is the father of 3 lovely daughters... If not for that, this would definitely be questionable...
McD and I are tied for last with 16 cards.
